Ocean and outdoor safety — read this part

The west side has real water. Shorebreak, rip currents, sharp reef, and surf that changes fast.

Nothing on this site is a safety clearance. We describe places; we cannot tell you whether a place is safe on the day you visit, and we do not inspect, monitor, patrol, or supervise anything we write about.

Before you get in the water:

  • Swim at a lifeguarded beach and ask the lifeguards about conditions. They know today; we don’t.
  • Check the official forecasts and warnings — the National Weather Service and Hawaii Beach Safety — and obey every posted sign, flag, and closure.
  • In an emergency, call 911.

About the box jellyfish window

Our homepage shows an estimated box jellyfish window. It is a calculation, not an observation. It is generated from the lunar cycle — box jellyfish typically arrive on south-facing Oahu shores roughly eight to ten days after a full moon — and nobody has gone to look.

Jellyfish do not read calendars. They turn up outside the predicted window, they skip windows entirely, and the pattern is better documented for south shores than for the leeward coast. Do not treat a quiet window as permission to swim, and do not treat our estimate as a substitute for posted warnings or lifeguard advice.

The same goes for the sunset time: it is astronomical arithmetic for a fixed set of coordinates, useful for planning and not for anything that depends on precision.

Accuracy — we try hard, and we still get things wrong

Businesses close. Hours change. Markets move or cancel for weather. We research every listing against sources we consider reliable, we record where each fact came from, and we deliberately leave a field blank rather than guess — but information here goes out of date the moment we publish it.

Always confirm directly with a business or organiser before you make the drive. Everything on this site is provided “as is,” without warranty of any kind, and we make no promise that anything is complete, current, or accurate.

Listings are not endorsements

A business appearing here is not a recommendation, a certification, or a guarantee of quality, safety, or fair dealing. We have no business relationship with the places we list. We take no payment for inclusion, placement, or a favourable description — there is no advertising on this site and no affiliate arrangement. If that ever changes, it will be disclosed plainly.

Any dealings you have with a business you found here are strictly between you and them.

Links to other sites

We link to organisers, businesses, and agencies. Those sites are not ours, we do not control them, and a link is not an endorsement of anything they say or do.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, WestOahu.org and the people behind it are not liable for any loss, injury, or damage arising from your use of this site or from anything you did or didn’t do because of it — including decisions about where to swim, drive, eat, or spend money.

You use this site, and you go to the places described on it, at your own risk and on your own judgement.

Something wrong? Tell us

If a listing is inaccurate, out of date, or shouldn’t be here at all, we want to know and we will fix it promptly. See Corrections and removals.
